Spring Fishing

Spring fishing is in full swing. We have had a great spring sailfish run. The sailfishing in mid-March to end of May is now better than the sailfishing in January through mid-March. We have had quite a few days with double digit sailfish releases and have been average 3 7 sailfish per trip and as high as 18. After all these years it is still so cool to watch a sailfish come up and eat a kite bait! The sailfish should continue to be very good well into the end of this month.

Besides sailfish we are starting to see some of the big spring kingfish. Just last week we caught a 42 pound king and the next day caught a 35-pound kingfish. These big kings are known as “smokers”. That is because of the smoking first run they make as well as they are excellent on a smoker. Spring is when we see the biggest kingfish of the year.
The much-anticipated run of the bigger blackfin tunas is finally starting to arrive. We have been consistently catching a big blackfin tuna (over 25 pounds) on practically every trip these past two weeks, but we have not had the big banner days of 5 to 10 big tunas a day. Our best day was 4 tunas followed by three tunas, but most often it has been one to two blackfins per day. May has always been the best month for them and I’m sure this May will not disappoint. Talking about tunas, we have been seeing those big bluefin tunas occasionally and hooked one a week or so ago. We also hooked another yellowfin tuna but unfortunately did not end up catching it.
We did do a yellowfin tuna trip to Bimini and did catch a few nice yellowfin tunas. We also did some deep dropping and had a banner day with the deep-water snappers, especially the queen snappers.
Pretty soon we will be transitioning into mahi fishing in the Gulfstream, but we still have a solid month of spring fishing on the edge for sailfish, blackfin tunas and big kingfish.
