Report Date: February 2, 2007

So far this year has not been a disappointment as there are plenty of fish to catch. Sailfish are the species we are primarily catching and the fishing has been good. Since my last report, we have been catching a few sails on our trips and our best days we have managed 7 on one day and 5 on a half day trip. The conditions have been getting better with more fronts rolling in and this week there has been a push of blue water and north current. If those conditions continue and another r front is scheduled early next week, the bite may really get hot. This is the time of year last year that we caught 21 on day and had 18 a few days as well. I don’t know if we will see those numbers, as last year was a great year, but if we do, I’m going to be ready. We had two days off this week, so the boat is stocked and we have plenty of leaders, hooks, sabikis, you name it!

Besides sails, there have been a few dolphin around. The dolphin fishing has been slower than normal, but a couple of days of east winds should get them all pushed back on the edge. Kingfishing has been slow and the fish have been on the small side.

After over a month, I finally got to go swordfishing again and we caught one out two swords. The sword we caught was 58” lower jaw to fork length and was approximately 85 pounds. Not a great huge swordfish, but after a month or so, it was great to catch one and to be out on an absolutely gorgeous night. The sword trips are really backed up and we have many trips booked, so hopefully the weather will allow us to take advantage. I also went tarpon fishing one night and after a slow start we caught a huge fish of over 120 pounds. It was quite the fight on 20 pound tackle.

The bad news for the people who haven’t booked there trips is that I only have three open dates left in February. I do have dates in March available and the fishing in March and April can be red hot, so give me a call and let’s go catch them.

Tight Lines,
Capt. Dean Panos
