Fishing Reports
Fish the "Edge"
Report Date: December 3, 2009
Fishing on the edge has been good. There have been sailfish, dolphin, kingfish and a few boats have also caught a few wahoo. There have also been some cobia around, but not in the numbers that we will see in the next few months. The good news is that the swordfish bite has also picked up. We did one daytime trip this week and caught one swordfish, but we did have 5 bites that day. That is a very good sign since getting one bite a day was the norm for the past month or so. I plan on going again some time next week, so hopefully we’ll see if the fish are finally here.
Fishing on the edge has been good. We have had enough wind for the kites and have been averaging 2 sailfish per day. We haven’t had any double digit days since the last report, but we have more cold fronts coming and hopefully it is only a matter of time for the big pods of fish to move in. The cold fronts move the bait and the predators down and sailfish love a wind out of the North, NW or NE, which is the wind you normally get during and just after a cold front. Not that you can’t catch sailfish without a north wind. You can basically catch a sailfish in any wind direction, but the true sailfish days are usually right after a cold front.
Besides sailfish, there have also been kingfish in the 5 to 30 pound range as well as dorado of basically the same size. The dorado have mostly been coming on the kite baits and the kings have been on the deep lines and the flatlines. There have also been some mutton snappers on the bottom as well.
The holiday season is quickly approaching and an excellent gift for that special someone in your life that loves fishing is a gift certificate for a fishing charter. Give that certificate knowing that we will try to make this his or hers best fishing gift ever. A lot of us will also have friends and family here during the holidays. The couple of weeks around the holidays are typically very busy for us guides and although I do have quite a few trips already booked, I still have some openings. If you would like to take some friends or family out fishing, give me a call and we can set something up. Now is also the time of year to book for the upcoming winter season. We already have charters booked but still have plenty of dates. Give me a call and let’s set it up.
Tight Lines,
Capt. Dean Panos
