Fishing Reports

Great Mixed Bag

Report Date: December 6, 2016

For the past two weeks we have been strictly fishing in the edge in Miami and let me tell you it has been very good fishing. I have been claiming that it has been a great fall season for sailfish and it really has, and now that we are in December and in the beginning of winter, the sailfish have not disappointed us. It has been a consistent bite almost every day with 3 to 5 sailfish a day the normal. We haven’t had any double-digit release days yet but other boats have and it’s just a matter of time until we do as well. For the most part all the sailfish we have been catching are full grown and I don’t know what it is in these waters, but these fish sure do fight hard especially on the 20 pound tackle we target them on. Most of the fish have been caught kite fishing and some pitching while we see a freejumper or a tailer (sailfish surfing down sea). We have had mostly green to blue-green water, which is not ideal, but for the past week or more we have had some decent north current. If the current holds and the blue water moves in it’s going to be on fire!

What has made the fishing in Miami so good though, is besides sailfish, there have also been other fish to catch in between the sailfish bites. Mahis have been pretty prevalent and most are decent size schoolies to gaffers although a buddy of mine did catch one close to 40 pounds just yesterday. There also have been some wahoo around and almost every day you here of one or two wahoos being caught. We caught a nice one just a few days back while kite fishing. There have been some kingfish around, anywhere from snakes to smokers so from 3 pounds to 30 pounds. To top it off there have been a few blackfin tunas, bonitos, skipjacks tunas and cobias in the mix. Definitely been a great mixed bag.

We are rapidly approaching the holidays and if you have that someone special in your life and you can’t find the perfect gift, we offer gift certificates for fishing trips on the Double D. It may very well be the perfect gift you are looking for. Also with the holidays getting near, if you have friends or family coming to town or are visiting from out of town, I still have open dates between Christmas and New Years and those dates usually book quick so keep that in mind if you would like to go fishing during the holiday week. Tomorrow we hed up to Palm Beach to fish the first sailfish tournament (Operation Sailfish). Wish us luck!!

Tight Lines,
