Happy Holidays and Great Fishing

Report Date: December 28, 2008

I hope everyone is having a great holiday season and enjoying time with friends and family. I would also like to take this opportunity and thank all my clients, friends and sponsors for another great year for Double D Charters. We had so many great trips with new and old friends and clients. As many already know, this is a hard business and it is the things (both big and small) that sponsors and clients do that keeps us in business and has made for some great days on the water.

Now for the fishing, thanks to my friends and major sponsors at SeaVee Boats, I got a free entry into the Sailfish Kickoff Tournament and fished it with my youngest daughter, Brittany. Our goal was to fish for the Jr.Angler award. We had some very strong winds out of the East which kicked up the seas quite a bit, but my daughter held in there and managed to catch 6 sailfish during the tournament. She ended up with 2nd place Jr. Angler, 2nd place Female Angler and 4th place overall angler. With her hard work and the help of my two mates Leo and Jared, we also got 7th place overall outboard boat. It was a great tournament and as a father, I was so proud to watch my daughter catch sails in some very demanding conditions. At one point I looked at her and she was drenched from head to toe fighting a fish off of the bow. For Christmas I got her some good women’s foul weather gear.

As you can see from above, their have been a fair amount of sailfish around. Most of the sailfish have been from 120 to 180 feet of water although yesterday we caught some in as shallow as 85 feet of water. If he sailfishing seems a bit slow, try different depths and listen to the VHF radio for depths of where other boats are catching them. Besides sailfish, there have also been a good amount of dolphin around as well as some kingfish. The kings have been on the small size and most have been very shallow (40 -50 ft). That said though, we did catch a nice king of about 30 pounds yesterday in 130 ft of water, so you just never know.
With the strong winds nobody has really ventured offshore for swordfish, but the wind is already dying out today and is expected to be very calm all week. Hopefully we will book some trips for anglers looking to catch a broadbill either during the day or at night.

I hope everyone has a great and safe New Year. If you are looking to go fishing next year, give me a call and let’s have a great day on the water!

Tight Lines,
Capt. Dean Panos
